What I Am

I
Was a good man
And no I wasn’t perfect
I made my mistakes
But I never meant to hurt you on purpose
I know I promised you
We would live happily ever after
But when does ever after begin
And what happens after?
What happens after the connection is made?
What happens when the hard times
Come your way?
Does that mean ever after
Isn’t so ever after?
Does it mean it’s come and gone
And that love’s no longer a factor?
Sometimes I mess up
And at times I get mad
But I loved you more
Than you’ll ever understand
Because I am a good man
And no I’m not perfect
But you saw something in me anyway
That let you know that I was worth it
Now no one could foresee
The problems that would arise
But you loved me anyway
Past the sins and the lies
And yes I sinned and I lied
But that doesn’t take way
From the fact that I tried
Because I
Am a good man
I tried to make it work
Before anything
I still put you first
You were more than a star to me
You were my Earth
Because only on Earth
Can man survive
And you were my world
The center of my life
And I was a good man
I was your good man…

Now I was far from perfect
I did so much wrong
It was my fault that sometimes
We did not get a long
I started some fights
Made you cry some nights
But let me explain
In an attempt to make things right
When I argue with you
It’s because I love you so much
And I don’t want to be misunderstood
Because I’ve been through some stuff
It’s made me defensive
I always have a point to prove
And I’ll fight with you to prove it
Because that’s how much I love you
Because I AM a good man
And I gave you my all
I was there to build you up
And to catch you if you should fall
Because that’s what a good man does
Even when he’s making mistakes
He’s still right there in love
And when he’s causing you pain
There’s a hurt you can see in his eyes
Because when you’re not happy
It’s as if a piece of him has died
Though he may not let it show
Because of his pride
But he’d give anything to fix it
And to just see you smile
And I am that good man
Your pain is my misery
Sometimes I can’t say it verbally
But this is my revelation lyrically
I’m not telling you my story
To gain any sympathy
I’m just giving you background
So you understand what’s gotten in to me
But I am a good man
Though I slip up and fall
I am STILL
A good man
PERFECTLY. FLAWED.
